Onboarding is the use of a coach to help a new hire acclimatise to the culture of an organisation and deal with the challenges of a new role as quickly and effectively as possible.
It has the advantage of offering high-levels of targeted support to the individual at a very critical time without tying up valuable internal resources.
It is seen by new hires as a neutral, independent resource at a time when they are keen to make a positive impact.
It reflects the investment and development culture of the hiring organisation.
I am repeatedly amazed by how many companies go to huge efforts and expense to hire talented individuals and then fail to invest in their integration within the business during the first few critical months. It almost seems as though being thrown in at the deep end with little or no support is some form of initiation ceremony. In actual fact it is a waste of time and resources for both the new hire and the company concerned.
I have worked closely with many senior hires to help them get the most out of their early months within the company and greatly increase their impact on the business.
